Without a doubt, this is the best coffee grown on Oahu.

Hand-harvested, processed in small batches, and carefully tended by the purpose-driven researchers at the 501c3 Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC). This and our future Oahu coffees come from a special partnership developed between Big Island Coffee Roasters and HARC.

Besides producing an exotic array of coffee varieties designed to serve as a seed bank for local farmers, HARC performs important field research on Koa - an endemic hard-wood tree and keystone species in the native forests of Hawai'i - heirloom sugar cane, cacao, soil preservation, and more. They've even successfully bred a wilt-resistant Koa tree, able to withstand exposure to fungus. We're thrilled to share their specialty Oahu coffees, not only because they're one-of-a-kind, but also because your purchase will fuel, support, fund and grow this horticulture crop research that gives back to Hawaii.

Bourbon (pronounced boar-bone) is a top tier arabica variety known for being abundantly sweet and doing tremendously well in competitions all over the world (we won the Hawaii Statewide Cupping Competition in 2013 with our Pink Bourbon variety). This is a blend of pink, red, and yellow bourbon (see picture #2, photo by researcher  Juli Burden) that was grown just west of Kailua in the lush Maunawili Valley, nestled between the Olomana Ridge and the a large Koolaus range. It grows interspersed with Koa, which provides extra nitrogen and shade to the coffee trees.

P.S. You can also support HARC directly through donations at http://www.harc-hspa.com/
